I was reading a thread here a while ago about the most confounding systems in a society someone had made. It got me thinking about overly complex societies.

There have been a few examples of these in history, such as the Indian caste system, but I feel like the most extreme example was the Aztec social hierarchy. The Aztec had a sliding scale system for everything, with some groups having active social mobility, while others were locked into lower casts.

So with that in mind, I made a overly complex society.
It’s a sliding scale with social mobility, but there are a few locked in lower castes.

First, the locked in castes-

1. Tusted- This is the lowest caste in this society. They have no rights, and they are slaves to the state. Tusted are used for hard labor, and the only other thing that they can be used for is to be used as target practice for military training. The only way to become a Tusted is to be born into it.

2. Marned- This is the second-lowest caste. Marned are used to do jobs that are considered dishonorable, such as waste collection, sewer cleaning, and butchering. Marned are allowed to own property, but they have no rights, and they are heavily discriminated against.

3. Vith- Vith are considered undesirable, and they are often discriminated against. They are active enforcers of social hierarchy, and they are often used as a strong arm to police lower castes. Vith are allowed to own property, and they have limited rights.

Now, on to the main castes-

*Joint castes are denoted by /. All castes not listed as joint are exclusive.*

1. Nefteuk- This is the lowest caste that has full rights. Nefteuk are allowed to own property, join the military, and hold public office. Nefteuk are often teachers, professors, and scientists. They are considered undesirable, but they are respected for their knowledge and wisdom.

2. Danu- Danu are often blue-collar workers, such as manufacturing line workers, construction workers, and miners. Danu are not often trusted with jobs that require a lot of responsibility, but they are essential to the survival of society.

3. Keznait/Keznor- Keznait are often called Technicians. They are in charge of maintaining and repairing consumer goods. Keznor are often called Technologists, and they are in charge of developing new consumer goods.

4. Gu/Gui- Gu are often called Artisans. They are skilled craftsmen, and they are in charge of creating luxury goods. Gui are often called Architects, and they are in charge of designing and planning public and private structures.

5. Fi/Fip- Fi are considered the warrior caste. Fip are considered the priest caste. Fi are often called Soldiers, and they are in charge of defending society. Fip are often called Clergy, and they are in charge of maintaining and teaching spirituality.

6. Ta- Ta is often called the merchant caste. They are in charge of facilitating trade, and they are often in charge of finances.

7. Raca/Racno- Raca is often called the governing caste. Racno is often called the enforcement caste. Raca are often called Politicians, and they are in charge of making decisions for society. Racno are often called Enforcers, and they are in charge of enforcing the law.

8. Vath/Vot/Vox- Vath is often called the leadership caste. Vot are often called the commanding caste. Vox are often called the ruling caste. Vath are often called Leaders, and they are in charge of guiding society. Vot are often called Commanders, and they are in charge of directing Soldiers. Vox are often called the Council, and they are in charge of advising Leaders.

Now, for social mobility-

There are four ways to move up and down the social hierarchy.

1. Service- Working in the active military can often bring your children up a caste or two, depending on merit and bravery.

2. Marriage- Marrying up a caste is a common social climbers tactic. However, marrying down a caste can bring your children down a caste.

3. Merit- Showing extreme talent and ability can often bring you up a caste. However, active subversion and dissent can bring you down a caste.

4. Patronage- Gaining favor with someone of a higher caste or the Council can bring your family up a number of castes, but losing favor with someone of a lower caste can bring your family down.

What are your thoughts?
