I have been working as a software engineer in industry in the USA for over 20 years. I started college in the 90's and graduated with a B.S. in computer science. During my undergraduate studies I was given opportunities to do research in the field. I was never able to get a Ph.D. because of lack of money and resources. I took a job in industry to support myself and never pursued research again.

After 20 years of working in industry I have come to the realization that industry is not for me. I feel like something is missing from my life and I think I will be happier if I pursue a career in research. I am now financially in a place where I can take a big hit in pay and I want to pursue a career in academia. I am not sure where to start.

I went to graduate school for the first year a long time ago, but I did not finish. I know I need a Ph.D., but is there anything else I should do? Do I need to take more courses? Should I get a master's? Should I try to get a research position at a University? How do I make myself a viable candidate? I feel like I am at square one and have a lot to learn about computer science and I feel like I have no idea where to start.

I am in my early 40's. I know this will be a long road and will require a lot of dedication and perseverance. I am at the very beginning of what will be a multi decade journey. I am looking for advice on how to start.
