How do you avoid people who are not kind to you?

I am a nurse. Even if you are a really good person, people can treat you poorly, even if you do your best. A lot of these people have legitimate reasons to be upset, but these reactions are often not legitimate. I am not sure what to do. It is strange, but if you are kind to your nurses, they tend to be kind to you as well.
