Is anyone here a developer or is this just a bunch of Luddites?

Honestly curious. I’m not sure how to feel about this movement. But if we’re on the path to AI singularity then we should all be able to agree that it’s a bad thing. Why would a future of humans being obsolete be a good thing?

I’ve been reading on this chamber and the people seem very uninformed. Saying one day you’re going to wake up and all of a sudden AI is going to be more intelligent than a human is a joke. That day will take decades to approach and everyone will see it coming.

It’s like the argument of the Americans saying it’s time to go to war with China. It’s very clear that the war with China is going to happen in the future and it’s going to be a long one. But I don’t think either side is preparing for it fast enough. We can see the war coming and we’re still far from getting ready. But we all know it’s going to be a long war and it’s going to suck. It’s getting harder and harder to not believe the war is going to happen within the next 20 years.

But back to the topic, it’s clear that we’re going to be seeing a lot of AI. I got a text from my girlfriend today saying how she was talking with a customer and she was trying to say something funny but it didn’t translate well. She said something like the following: “I just want to say that I’m kidding but I’m not sure if the text will translate as a joke. This is just a side note”. She said it translated to “I just want to say that I’m kidding. This is just a side note”.

I think this is a perfect example of how AI is going to mess up human communication. It also took her about 15 minutes just to make sure the conversation was going on right. Imagine having a 20 minute conversation and the two people in the conversation hate each other because the AI fucked up their communication.

Another side note, is that this movement is going to be harder to implement than it sounds. Everyone is going to agree that we don’t want businesses to use AI. But what about science? We should just stop all the cancer research because it’s using AI or just stop all the developments of nuclear power plants because of the computing power required is a joke.

So is this movement just a bunch of people who hate the fact that AI is businesses are starting to use AI?
