CMV: It's morally reprehensible that police departments refuse to hire alcoholics (recovered or otherwise)

Police departments will constantly hire bipolar people, people with depression, people with PTSD, diabetics, smokers, and people with other conditions that could (and does) impact their job performance. The only condition that it seems anyone has a problem with hiring police officers with is alcoholism. I don't know of anyone that has been prejudiced against in the hiring process like people that have been alcoholics.

I don't see why someone that is recovered from alcoholism can't be a police officer. Why is one condition that can be treated wrong to hire police officers with but no other condition? And if an alcoholic officer fucks up on the job, that's what training and common sense are for. I think anyone that has been trained in first aid should know how to react to an alcoholic getting drunk (be patient with them and take them home). Why is that suddenly wrong when police officers are trained in crisis management (de-escalation, suicide, medical emergency, etc.)?

The only thing I can think of is that police departments think that being an alcoholic officer is so prejudicial that they don't want to hire alcoholics to begin with. I don't see why anyone getting drunk on the weekends should be a problem with someone being a police officer. As I just stated, anyone with any condition can fuck up on the job, does that mean those people can't be police officers? No.

Edit: This was also posted on r/roosterteeth. I'm just double dipping :P.
