A federal judge has blocked Twitter's new policy of verifying accounts, ruling that it likely violates trademark law, including by allowing fake accounts to impersonate celebrities and other public figures.&#x200B;<br><br>The preliminary injunction issued Wednesday is an initial victory for a coalition of celebrities and companies whose brands were being impersonated on the platform, inlcuding singer Mariah Carey.&#x200B;<br><br>The Social Network, Inc. had introduced a new system to verify user identities on the platform, which would charge $7.99 a month for a blue check mark, known as "Twitter Blue."&#x200B;<br><br>That was a change from its previous policy, which verified high-profile users for free.<br><br>The judge said that Twitter's policy likely violates trademark law by allowing fake accounts to impersonate public figures.<br><br>The judge had previously indicated in an earlier hearing that it was likely that Twitter had engaged in trademark dilution and had deceived consumers.
