Last night was the worst hotel experience of my life. 36 hours with no power, no running water and no elevator

My friend and I are on a 3 city holiday in Italy. We are Americans living in Switzerland. My friend is always on the road because she works in a different city than where she lives.

We stayed at the Hotel Torino in Florence, Italy for 2 nights. It’s a 3 star hotel. Her company paid for the room anyway.

My friend and I are both experienced travelers and have stayed in a variety of hotels. This hotel is a few floors in a tall building. When we checked in, we were greeted with construction in the lobby. So we weren’t all that impressed with the hotel immediately. But our room was clean and the staff were friendly. However, we noticed there was no fridge in the room. When we asked why, we were told that the fridges all broke down. My friend is very picky and brought her own snacks. She needs to keep her snacks in the fridge.

We stayed in the hotel for 2 nights. On the second night, we had some bad luck. When we returned to the hotel at 10:00 PM, there was a sign on the elevator saying it was out of order. It was no problem for us because we only had small bags. It was only a 4 story walk. It was a little annoying but we could handle it.

We opened the door to our room and saw that the lights didn’t turn on. No problem. We used our flashlights on our phones. But when we tried to brush our teeth, there was no running water. The hotel staff were very apologetic and gave us extra bottles of water. But my friend and I were really thirsty and didn’t have enough water. Luckily I had some soda in my suitcase that I packed from home that we could use to brush our teeth. My friend was shocked that I would pack soda but I told her it’s for emergencies. (Once I got food poisoning on a flight and didn’t have any soda). Her company paid for our hotel stay but we still had to pay tax when we arrived which was 6€ each. So we decided to ask for a refund. But the hotel staff were very nice about it and promised us a full refund for both nights.

The power didn’t come on until 2:00 AM when we were fast asleep. And the elevator wasn’t fixed until we checked out. The hotel staff were apologetic and offered us a refund. But this was one of the worst hotel experiences of my life.

Has anyone ever stayed in a hotel with no power and no running water? Or is this a first?
