I met my stalker at summer camp

During the summer after 3rd grade, I went to a week long summer camp in central Pennsylvania (I’m an east coaster, USA).

It was a really fun week! I loved the group activities, the bunks, the food (although everyone knows camp food is never great, but it’s just an adventure). My favorite part was that they let us go solo a little and pick our activities. It was like public school. They’d ring the bell and you’d go to class.

So you don’t have to read too much, I’ll keep this short.

I was 8 years old and two of the counselors were a couple. They brought their baby with them. One of the girls in my dorm was jealous of the attention the baby got and she suffocated it one night.

I slept through all of this, got up for breakfast and was told that all the girls in my dorm needed to get their stuff together, including me, because they were going to moved into other dorms.

No one ever told me what happened. I wasn’t even told that the counselor and her baby were gone. It made no sense. Until one of the counselors approached me and said that I needed to move my stuff to a new dorm because a new camper had arrived and she was moving in my old bunk.

Flash forward a few days. I’m having a good time with my new bunk. I’m busy all day so it’s not like I’m sitting there missing my old bunk. It’s fun.

There’s this one game that everyone likes to play. Dodge ball, but you can hit people in the head. So the ball got hit to the side and I ran after it. Lost it in a bush, went behind the bush and found the ball but there was a little girl.

I said hi. She said she was waiting for me. I got a little weirded out but I was 8 and I didn’t really know what to say. She was a little older than me by a few years but she looked my age. She was short.

So she got up and started walking with me. I said “what’s your name?”

This was weird. I know it’s weird. She didn’t really answer me. She asked me my name. I told her. And she said “you’re pretty.”

I remember thinking that was off. This game was going on right behind us but she wasn’t there to play the game. I know that now.

Anyways. I ran back to the game. Thought nothing of it.

This was 1993.

When I got home from camp I was told by my mom that I couldn’t go outside unless she was in the back or side yard with me.

I didn’t really understand that request.

This was the 90s. We were outside all of the time.

So I was in my room, looking out my second story window. There’s this little girl standing in my front yard. Staring up at me.

This was a new neighborhood for me. We’d moved in 6 months before camp. So at first I thought she was a neighborhood girl being friendly. But she was just staring up at me.

And it was a weekday. And I knew she was at least 11-12. So why wasn’t she at school? Why was she in my yard?

I called out to her but she didn’t move.

Finally my mom came upstairs and asked me what was going on. I pointed out the window and when she saw the girl she freaked out.

She started yelling at her to get off of our lawn. But the girl didn’t move. She didn’t run away. She didn’t flinch. She just kept staring up at me.

My mom called the cops and I got sent to my room until they came. So I never got to see if/when the cops showed up.

I never saw her again.

When I saw my mom a few hours later, she had a weird look on her face.

I asked her what happened to the girl and my mom said “can we talk about it outside?”

I agreed and she told me that they never found the girl. They looked around the block, down the street, everywhere. She said they went into the houses nearby, to see if she was in a house but they couldn’t find her.

It started to freak me out. I asked her why she thought the girl was there and my mom went quiet. She looked around to make sure no one was listening (none of our neighbors were out) and she said that she’d gotten a few calls that week about a girl being spotted in the front yard.

She said the calls started the day I got home from camp.

She said I wasn’t allowed to go outside at all unless she was with me.

I was a kid, so of course I disobeyed. I’d got out for a few seconds but never long enough to be caught.

It was probably two weeks after the first incident that I went outside alone. The front door slammed behind me as it always did and I froze. There was a little girl standing in my front yard again, staring at me. But this time she was closer. It was the same girl as before.

I went inside but I never told my mom. I figured I’d get in trouble for being outside alone.

I never went outside alone again. Especially at night. But sometimes I’d look out my window and she’d be there. I’d look out my window and she’d be on the sidewalk, just staring at me.

I lived in that house until I was 21. I moved out in 2006 and she was there sporadically throughout those years. Sometimes I’d see her every night for 2 weeks in a row. Sometimes it was every few months. But it was always the same girl.

In 2005, the neighbors next door sold their house and moved. Their grown daughter was cleaning out their house and she noticed me watching her from my window. We talked for a bit and she told me that she’d lived next door to me growing up and that she’d lived there throughout college.

I asked her about the girl I used to see in the yard and she told me that she’d also seen her.

She told me that she’d been visiting her parents one weekend throughout law school and she happened to be outside taking out the trash. She said the same girl was out on the sidewalk, just off of our property but on the sidewalk closest to my house.

She said she approached the girl, asking her what she was doing but the girl ran away.

She said that she followed the girl but lost her after about a block. She said she went back to her parents and told her parents what happened.

She said that she never saw the girl again. She said that her parents never told her anything about it and that she assumed they just figured the girl was acting out or something.

So she went on with her life and forgot about it. Until I brought it up.

I moved out in 2006. I’d never seen the girl again. But part of why I moved was because I couldn’t deal with it anymore.

I live in a different state now. I moved in 2014. I don’t look out my windows anymore.

She would have had to have been 12-14 when I met her in 1993. That would make her 32-34 now.

And yes, I know I’m a woman, but she was taller than me at 8. She was probably 5’1 at 12. She would be an adult now. Full grown.

If you’ve been watching me since 1993, you can stop now. Or let’s meet up. Whatever.
