Just because dieing is scary and sad doesn't make it a tragedy.

Dieing is scary and sad, but that doesn't make it a tragedy. A tragedy is a situation that leads to an unhappy or unpleasant ending.

A quick example would be the movie requim for a dream, the ending is a tragedy because it could have been prevented. All of her choices lead to her unhappy ending, the ending wasn't happy because it was scary or sad, but because it was all the results of choices of the character.

The ending of titanic where Leonardo DiCaprio dies is sad because he's a nice person, and his death was scary, but it isn't a tragedy. A tragedy would be if he had actually been able to get on the board with Kate Winslet, but then jumped off for some stupid reason and died, or if he had actually made it to the point where he could call for rescue but decided not to.

This is a pet peeve of mine because in America we just throw around tragedy left and right. Sometimes a tragedy truly has happened, but sometimes it's just sad. Sometimes a tragedy can be both sad and scary, but not all sad and scary things are tragedies.

edit: You guys are adding a lot, thanks.
