Why should you bring a snack when you visit someone?

My dad always tells me to bring a snack with me wherever I go. It could be fruit or chips or anything to eat. He says that you never know when you will get hungry and want something to eat. I'm confused, why would I be hungry at someone else's house? Do they not feed you there?
