Why do I always attract Chinese speakers?

I'm taking Japanese classes, and I have a friend I speak to in German. I always do my best to speak Chinese (because that's the language I'm best at) when I'm in Taiwan. But somehow, every time I'm out and about, I attract Chinese speakers.

I've had Chinese lecturers approach me in the library and ask me if I would like to practice my Chinese with them. I've had people stop and talk to me for 3 hours about their work and family. I've had people talk my ear off for an hour about how great the CCP is. I've had people invite me into their homes to eat.

I always try to explain that I'm not native speaker, but no one would listen. They think I'm from China.

When I told my professor about this, he said that it's a known phenomenon in Taiwan. Taiwanese people will speak Chinese to anyone who has Chinese characteristics. I understand that Chinese people and Taiwanese look similar, but I'm still not Chinese. I'm American. But no one would listen. They just won't.

I wish I were fluent in Japanese or German. I wish I had native speaker level Japanese or German. But I don't. The only language I'm ever good at is Chinese. And I'm sick of being mistaken for a Chinese.

I tried to explain this to my friend, but they just laughed and said "you're Chinese". No I'm not.

I understand that as a white person, I won't ever be fluent in Chinese. I understand that as a white person, I'll always be a foreigner. But I wish I could just speak Chinese in peace. I wish I didn't have to be asked if I'm Chinese every time I speak Chinese. I wish I could just be an American who is fluent in Chinese, but I don't think that will ever be the case.
