How do you cook for one or two people?

I am a college student and I’m trying to save money by doing most of my cooking at home. I live in an apartment with one roommate, so we are both cooking for one/two people.

I have noticed that most recipes have been making a lot more food than we need, so we’re wasting a lot of food and money. A big pot of soup or big batch of chicken is great for saving time and money but ends up costing us more because we don’t end up eating it before it goes bad.

Are there any tips or methods for cooking for one or two people? Do recipes exist for batch sizes this small?
