Why does everyone speak English?

Not to be controversial, but recently, I’m going to Turkey, and all the locals speak English. I’m going to Spain, and the waitress at the restaurant is speaking English. I’m going to France (the ultimate non English speaking country), and my Airbnb host has a daughter who speaks perfect English. Only 100 million people speak Portuguese, but everyone in Portugal speaks English. Everyone in Prague speaks English. I’m in Poland and people speak English. I was in Italy, and everyone spoke English. Not just the younger people, but people in their 60’s and 70’s. I’m in Switzerland, and not only do people speak English, but actual native English speakers, with no accent.

I can’t travel anywhere without everyone speaking English. I can go to 20 different countries and never have to speak the local language. Everything is written in English. Everyone speaks English. And I’m not talking about touristy places, I’m talking about going into a random pita restaurant in some random neighborhood in Turkey and the guy at the restaurant speaks perfect English.

It’s insane. Every time I go to a new place, I’m expecting to have trouble with not knowing the language and the locals not knowing English. But every time, it’s the complete opposite, and I have no trouble at all.

I can’t travel anywhere without everyone speaking English, but the locals of my country (USA) are the ones who don’t speak the local language. It’s very strange that the rest of the world can figure out how to speak a second language, but we can’t.
