In the beginning there was only God. God was bored and lonely. The solution was simple.

‘Let there be light.’

And there was light. God used it to build a house. It was lovely; a quaint little place, painted white with a master bedroom overlooking a pretty little valley. The architect was pleasingly amazed with himself. The house was wonderful, but it needed some furnishings. That’s when he found the power tools.

‘Let there be a table in the valley.’

Nothing happened.

God walked to where he had built the house. Inside the house a table sat nicely, with a neatly folded white tablecloth and a bowl of fruit set on top of it. He was perplexed, as he had meant to build the table in the valley. The Construction Company of Heaven was still in its early days, after all. He shrugged and built a walkway from the house to the valley.

‘Let there be a walkway in the valley.’

Again, nothing happened.

Realising what he had done, he rectified, ‘Let there be a table and a walkway in the valley.’

As he went down to look he smiled. The table sat in the valley, the walkway connecting it to the house on the hill. He leant against the table. The house was completed and his power was growing. The valley needed a garden.

‘Let there be a garden in the house,’ he said.

God rolled his eyes. The house was nice enough; he didn’t want to ruin it with a tangle of thorns, leaves and vines.

‘Let there be a garden in the valley,’ he said, correcting himself.

And with that, the company of Heaven was finished with its first building project. There was a house, which contained a table. The house sat on a hill looking down on a valley that was connected by a walkway. The valley contained a table and a garden, and God could not be happier.

He sat on the walkway and admired his construction.

‘Let there be company,’ he said.
