Warning to anyone who is thinking of becoming a teacher

I’ve been teaching for over 30 years and seen a lot of changes along the way. For the last few years, I’ve been considering retirement as a lot of colleagues have done. I’ve been questioning if I should carry on, despite the downsides that we all know about, as I really do like the job. <br>This morning, a sensation overtakes me as a wave of immense tiredness washes over me. I sit and look at the mountain of marking and preparation that I have to do and I feel defeated. I’ve never felt this way before so I know that I have made up my mind. Despite all the good times and the love for it, I can’t carry on. <br><br>I can’t think of a single colleague who now says that they want to be a teacher until they retire. I feel for the new teachers that are just starting out. <br><br>It’s a shame because I do love the job.
