I was too tired and too hungover to see it. But once I did, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

My friend and I had gone out for drinks last night. He wanted to do something nice for his girlfriend and take her out for dinner. I tagged along, happy for an excuse to get out of the apartment. They had a great time at the restaurant. Laughing and holding hands, the whole works. I sat at the bar sipping on a whiskey sour and making small talk with the bartender. After a few drinks, my friend had suggested we all head to a local bar to keep the night going. I was in no real shape to be social, so I begged off and took an uber home.

When I walked into the apartment, I was greeted by an empty space. A few hours ago it was filled with the sound of my friend and his girlfriend laughing and chatting over dinner. Now it was just me and the quiet hum of the refrigerator. I went straight to my bedroom and flopped down on the bed.

I laid there for a while, mindlessly scrolling through my phone as I waited for the exhaustion to overwhelm me. I must have dozed off before I knew it, because the next thing I remember was the sound of a car screeching to a halt outside my window. I sat up with a start, my phone slipped out of my hand and landed on the blanket. I tried to sit up and reach for it, but a wave of dizziness washed over me and I had to lie back down. When I finally worked up the courage to sit up again, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye.

There was a small camera on the windowsill above my bed, pointed at me. I froze, unsure of what to do. My first thought was that it was my friends. Maybe he put it there as a prank. But the longer I looked at the camera, the less likely that seemed. Why would he hide it so high up? And where was the rest of the camera? I could only see the lens. It almost looked as if it was on the other side of the glass.

I reached behind the curtain, searching for the body of the camera. But all I felt was glass. I looked at the lens again, and my blood ran cold. There was no body on my side of the glass. The camera was outside, looking in.

I didn’t know what to do. I thought about calling the cops, but what would I tell them? That there was a camera outside my window? They would just send someone over to look, realise there was no body, and laugh at me for being paranoid.

It’s been a few hours since I found it. I keep going back and forth to the window, staring at the camera. I tried to take a video of it, but the glass is too dirty. I can’t see the camera in the video. I need to tell someone about this. I need to tell my friend.

I’d better go get him.
