I watched my house get burglarized on my Nest cam, and then the burglar waved at the camera and said “Hi!”

I woke up in the middle of the night (I’m a night owl) and decided to check my email before going to sleep. I get an automated notification from my Nest security camera that there’s movement in the front of my house (it’s an outdoor camera under my eaves, about 8 feet off the ground). I open the app and see a person walking up the path to my house. They go up to the door, open it (thankfully it was locked and they couldn’t get in), then peer in the glass part of the door. Then my motion light turns on and they wave at the camera.<br><br>I immediately call 911, and they tell me to stay on the line with them. I tell them I think someone is breaking into my house. They say they’re on their way, and I give them a description of what the person looks like. My house is a cedar-sided ranch with a big tree out front. While the cops are on their way, my motion light times out (15 minutes) and the person tries the door again. It’s still locked. I honestly was not scared; I was more pissed off that someone was trying to break in. The cops finally showed up, and I let them in. They took a report, looked around the house, searched the neighborhood, but couldn’t find anyone. They told me it was probably kids, because they looked young.<br><br>The entire episode played out over a span of about 30 minutes. I’m shaken by it, but mainly because I could have been in there when they tried to break in. I’ve been thinking about getting a house alarm, but now I’m seriously thinking about it.<br><br>Edit: I’ve gotten a few questions about why I didn’t record it. The Nest app wasn’t open during the entire thing; I had to click on the notification, then open the app, then hit record. While I did open the app before the cops got there, my priority was talking to the cops and not thinking about recording it. I wish I had recorded it, but hindsight is 20/20, right?
