AI may do my job this week.

I know my title is sensationalist but I'm actually concerned. I'm a freelance graphic designer, which means I don't have to do the same thing over and over but each new client project usually involves me doing something I've never done before to deliver the work they want. I've been working this way for decades, and I usually know how to do something or can figure it out if I put my mind to it. In my experience, clients usually don't want what they have asked for, so I do the work to show it to them to then say "this is what you want". I usually know what that is going to be before I get into the work, which helps me predict how long it'll take. Usually I'm right, but if I'm wrong, it may take a few versions to get there.

I was approached this week by an agency to deliver a similar project. They set me up with their software and showed me examples of past work they've done. As instructed, I went through the brief, looked at their past work, and then tried to pass this same process off to an AI. It set me up with a template in languages I don't understand, and offered me a nice, if a bit bland, design. I was quite impressed actually. I do nice work, but when you see a lot of nice work, it's harder to be impressed.

I'm not really concerned about my ability to be creative here. I still have my skill, experience, and what I've learned from doing my work. The problem here is that the AI has taken me from the real designing part of my job and into the "figuring it out" part. I don't use this software, so I have to figure out how it works. The AI did my designing, so I need to figure out what to deliver to get paid, and if this isn't it, I need to figure out what the difference is going to be, do that, and then deliver again. I know how to make things look nice, but my designs are always bad at first. I need to know what my clients are looking for to then figure out how to make it look nice, and that usually evolves over my process.

Long story short, I'm not sure I can do this. I've been an AI skeptics for good reason, but I'm not in denial here. I know this has been around for a while, but this is the first time I've seen it in action.

I'm going to try and follow these instructions, but I'll probably be telling you my wrong answers to these questions if I do.

r/AskAI: A human asking me to do my job.

r/AskTeenGirls: A man telling my boyfriend to break up with me via AI.

r/AmItheAsshole: A set of parents telling me I wronged them over a man-made language model.

r/TrueOffMyChest: I canceled my mom's subscription to a anti-AI Facebook page.

r/relationships: My (F37) husband (M44) wants to use AI to help with our autistic (F11) daughter.

r/AskReddit: People who actually use AI to generate everything, do you ever set any limitations on it, or do you let it do everything for you?
