White House Internship: Is it worth the investment of time?

The White House Internship is an unpaid internship, but they sell it as a great opportunity and say the investment of time is worthwhile as it is a great networking and resume-building opportunity. Even if you have to pay money out of pocket to live in D.C. for several months to do this internship, they sell it as a great opportunity.

From my research, they expect you to be on site and work for free for 4-6 months. If you are a student, you won't be able to take classes, and if you have a job, you will have to quit. In spite of the internship, they say there is no guarantee of a job either. It is also competitive, and there is a long application process.

Do you think it is worth it? Do you think it is outrageous that the White House expects you to work for nothing, and also has to pay money out of pocket to be able to work for them for free?
