I (22F) have been dating my boyfriend (27M) for about 11 months now and I recently celebrated my birthday. My boyfriend wanted to buy me a gift, but he asked me to tell him the price beforehand, so I did.

He ended up buying me a gold plated chain (silver was my fave), a Michael Kors belt (black) and a Michael Kors wallet (black). I thanked him for the gifts, but was pretty embarrassed (and angry) tbh, because they didn’t really match my style.

My style is more Y2K and the gifts felt more like gifts your boyfriend from the early 2000’s would give you. I wanted to get gifts that were much more expensive, but he wanted me to tell him the price beforehand. I mean, I guess it was the most thoughtful thing he’s ever done for me, but it’s the thought that counts, right?

After I opened the gifts, he started giving me hints about how he wanted the belt and wallet back if we broke up, because it was too expensive. I wasn’t really sure, so I asked him straight out, which made him angry.

He said I was the worst girlfriend ever (he literally said this), because the gifts were too expensive. I was taken aback tbh, like OK, what. I told him that he didn’t even ask my style before buying anything and that the gifts felt like they were for your girlfriend from the early 2000’s and he didn’t say anything.

He asked me why I wanted to get gifts that were so expensive, because he doesn’t make a lot of money. I told him, that while he doesn’t make a lot of money, he makes more than me and he can afford the gifts I want.

This conversation went on for a while and eventually he just dropped off the Michael Kors wallet, the gold chain, the belt and my fave skirt at my place (which he borrowed). He seemed angry and I asked him why he was so angry, but he didn’t say anything.

The next day, he texted me and said that he was really hurt that I didn’t like the gifts he bought me. He told me that he’s buying me gifts because he cares about me and wants to show me how much. I was a bit confused and asked if I said the gifts were bad quality, but he didn’t answer.

He said I was the worst girlfriend ever and that my birthday present was the most expensive thing he’s ever bought and that I’m never satisfied. He also said I was a gold digger, which I don’t really agree with, because I don’t just date for money.

I wanted to give him the gifts he bought me back, because I didn’t want to keep them (especially since we broke up), but I didn’t want to look like an asshole.

I just posted here to know if I was in the right or not. I feel like I’m in the right, because the gifts really didn’t match my style, but I wanted to get gifts that were way more expensive and I don’t really like Michael Kors.
