Coworkers found out I’m a “returner” from maternity leave. Now they feel like I don’t need a job.

My workplace is mostly women, and most of them have kids. I have a son the age of 1yo.

I didn’t feel like sharing my mom life with coworkers (I’m pretty private about my family life), so I swapped shifts and didn’t have to take leave. Few of them know I’m a mom, but the rest just thinks I’m switching shifts for friends and so on.

Recently, one of my coworkers found out I am a mom, and today I found out she’s told the rest. Now I’m getting treated very weird. I have one coworker who swapped her shifts around the time I was giving birth, and she was very vocal about taking a year off for her kid. They’re all friends with her, so they know her maternity leave. Now they talk about maternity leave when I am around, and ask me questions like “oh, you want to get pregnant again?” And I’m like, “that’s not my plan”. But the answer was “no? You’re a mom, so you’ve taken leave before”.

It’s like they feel like they’ve earned or deserve the right to ask about my family life, because now they know I am a mom.

I’m so frustrated and feel like I am being watched. I am afraid they might have changed their idea of me and feel like I’m not as committed to the job. That’s why I took my leave quietly, to avoid treating me differently.
