Thoughts on AI generated world-building

A friend shared some AI image generation and AI writing prompts with me who uses them to generate character portraits and back stories. I'd been skeptical about AI generated content but was impressed with the results.

I'm curious to hear other people's views on AI generated content in general, especially in the context of world-building. There's a bit of history to this.

I've been trying to build a fictional history for a continent that's based on real world historical framework. I was inspired by A Not So Brief History of Time by Bill Bryson. I was drawn to the idea because of the lack of emphasis on colonialism as that's not something I want to explore in my work.

I was going to go down the route of pre-writing a world history timeline to inform my character history but this is a lot of work and I was struggling with the idea of writing a timeline that dates back 200k years. I thought using AI could give me a good starting point and have me pre-write the major events and then I could drill down into the characters.

Something that keeps coming back to me is the idea of a 'human touch' in writing. Does the use of AI generated prompts detract or add to the work? Is it fair to use AI generated prompts when that's not work that's been created by the writer themselves?

Do you think AI generated prompts are cheating or is this a tool that can be used as part of a larger creative process?
