What is the purpose of ethics?

I have been thinking about the purpose of ethics and how it functions in practice, and I find it rather confusing.

* We are all subject to the same laws, so we have laws already.
* Ethics has no enforcement mechanism.
* Ethics has no unified standard.
* Ethics has no way of establishing what is right or wrong, because of how ever changing the world is.
* Ethics has no way of ever establishing what is right or wrong, because ethics has no universal definition of terms.

I know a lot of people want to say that ethics is about doing what is right, but that is so much circular reasoning.

* Ethics says that the purpose of ethics is to do what is right and moral.
* Ethics has no way of defining what is right ever, because the terms change to often.
* Ethics then proceeds to say that what is right and wrong change too, so it can never be defined.
* Ethics then proceeds to say the purpose of ethics is to do what is right. (A circular reasoning that cannot be fulfilled.

Ethics has no real purpose, and it is much better to simply follow the law and ignore ethics.
