Google’s AI chief says the company will stop making AI chatbots like Bard as soon as governments create effective regulations that deal with their potential misuse like deepfakes.

“One of the great challenges for policymakers and regulators is how do you actually create regulation that has teeth, that actually has bite, when the technology is so mercurial,” said Google AI president and CEO Jeff Dean in an interview with The New York Times.

Dean says the company has been approaching AI regulation from multiple angles, such as putting in place guardrails like watermarks for generated content, and also by funding independent research into AI. But ultimately, Dean says the company would like to have “regulatory guardrails” in place that can help prevent the misuse of AI.

The regulation of AI has been on the agenda for many countries, with a lot of discussion in the EU Parliament and in the US Congress. But despite the discussion, there is very little in the way of concrete regulations.

While the US is still deliberating on how to regulate AI, the EU is closer to implementing regulatory frameworks. It is in the process of finalising the AI Act, which will provide a comprehensive framework for regulating AI across the bloc.

Google will be ready to stop producing AI chatbots like Bard as soon as AI regulations are in place, according to the NYT. The head of AI at Google said that people’s happiness should come first, and that it will only be making the chatbots that are a net positive for users and society as a whole.

The search giant will be monitoring how its other areas of AI are received by the public. The company announced the launch of Gemini, an AI chatbot that is far more advanced than Bard, in September.

Gemini will be far more capable than Bard, but the company still hopes that the technology will be well received, and that it will be able to create an AI chatbot that will be a net positive for everyone.

But this is the latest in a long line of tech firms announcing that their products are for the good of everyone. Tech firms announced the launch of ChatGPT, Bard, and other AI chatbots by talking about how they can revolutionise industries.

But the products have not been welcomed with open arms. Instead, there have been reports of people losing their jobs as a result of AI, and others have struggled with deepfakes.

The end of Google Gemini could be just round the corner as well. But the tech firm does not want to get there. It wants to be able to produce an AI chatbot that will be a net positive for people and wider society.

Google says it will stop making AI chatbots like Bard when governments create effective regulations (independent.co.uk)
