Men don't conceal their depression because they are afraid being seen as less of a man. They conceal because no one gives a fuck.

As Bill Burr once said 'ladies your issues may not get resolved but at least people give a fuck'. <br><br>And its true. Women have support systems for their depression, they have systems in place and people are much more prone to be sympathetic to women and don't want to see a woman suffering, people want to help and show they are not alone.<br><br><br>But for men we are alone, partially because of the traditional view that men cannot show weakness, but the biggest reason is no one cares. People don't just not care they distance themselves from you. Men and women will just walk away or show a miniscule amount of compassion. Men know that expressing our depression or darker thoughts is a terrible idea because it will make matters worse, not better. <br><br><br>There is this modern trend that traditional gender roles cause men not to talk about this, I think that's a small component of the reason, but its because most of us know if we come forward with our issues, the people around us and society at large will largely shun us. <br><br><br>This is also why I think its so hard for men to make friends, someone letting out a little slit of depression to a friend is a great way to test if someone actually cares about you, its a great way to see who will stick their neck out for you and who will politely sidestep you going forward. <br><br>So we just don't talk about it. Because almost no one cares. <br><br><br>This is not the same for women, as a man if I'm open about my depression to a woman, she will try to help, try to listen, try to be supportive, try to be a tender counterpart and show they care. When a woman is open about her depression to a man, he will do the same, but the big difference is women also receive that same level of care from other women. <br><br>Thus women have a whole support system available to them, while men have no one.
