Yes, you read that right.

So, my family recently moved to a different part of the same city. I still had some things to pick up at the old place so I decided to make a quick trip back to the old neighborhood. Since I was in the area, I swung by Costco to pick up some of my favorite snacks (the unflavored Kirkland singles whey powder and the unsalted, unsweetened almond butter).

I walk up to the kiosk and start unloading my items to pay. The Costco employee says "Membership, please?" to which I immediately say "Oh, sorry. Here you go." and pull out my membership card.

She says "Thank you...but I have to ask...is this your Costco membership?" I'm a bit confused by this but I say "Yes, of course." She then immediately tells me "I'm sorry, sir, but this membership was cancelled. Please do not buy anything from Costco again as you will have your purchases confiscated and be banned from the Costco chain." I was a bit shocked at this and it took me a few moments to come to my senses.

I asked her why it was cancelled and she said it was because I didn't pay my bill. I tell her that I just paid my bill a few days ago and that I should have gotten a notice in the email or something. She said that their system doesn't send emails unless you specifically sign up for paperless billing and that I didn't have it set up that way so I wouldn't have gotten any notice. I ask her to show me the account in the system and she shows me that I hadn't paid in two months.

I told her that I call bulls\*\*t. I pay all of my bills religiously as soon as they come in. I then had her call her manager over. The manager asks me what is wrong and I explain the situation and it's ridiculous not sending someone a notice when they have a membership that costs them hundreds of dollars a year. It just doesn't make sense why they wouldn't send a notice out when someone hasn't paid.

The manager looks in the system and agrees with me that something is up. She investigates for a bit and says that my Costco membership is actually under my wife's name and that she didn't pay the bill. I tell her that it doesn't make sense because I've been paying the Costco bill for years, why would it just switch to my wife's name? She tries to explain that this is Costco's policy when a member changes addresses and that it automatically switches the membership to the person who gave the new address. I ask her if she's joking as that makes absolutely no sense. She then tells me that, yes, I am banned from Costco and that I can't buy anything there anymore.

I tell her that this is ridiculous. Fine. Take my membership. I don't need Costco to survive. I don't have time for this B.S. and I haven't paid a single dollar for the items I'm there for already, so I just walk away.

So, there you have it. I'm banned from Costco for not having a Costco membership.

EDIT: I went to Costco a couple of days ago and the employees said, "Oh, you're the guy from a couple of days ago." I had a couple of managers come up to me and apologize for what happened. They took my membership and immediately deactivated it. Then they said that they would give me a $100 Costco gift card if I signed up for a new membership. So, I'm essentially getting a $30 membership for $-70.

"...and then I told him that *I* have a Costco membership!"
