Why were big tech companies creating AI chatbots in the first place?

I just don't understand why for-profit corporations are creating these things. I get creating the technology, but not mass production. What is the purpose? What is their business model? How do they make money? I see that big tech companies were creating the technology, but why are they delivering it to the masses?
