ELI5: Why does my dog always forget I moved the couch in the middle of the night?

The night before last, I got home super late from work and the flooring guys hadn't finished with my living room yet. To the dismay of my wife, I had them just leave the stuff on the second floor and I would take it down. I always get home late from work and she gets mad if I make noise because she's a light sleeper. One night, she woke up and I was taking stuff downstairs at 2am and now whenever I do it, no matter how quiet, she wakes up and tells me to be quiet.

So, it's 10pm, I'm starving, and I had just put the kids to bed. To aggravate my wife even more, I moved the couch in the living room to make it easier to put the flooring in the next day. I only moved it a few feet, but enough to where it had to be moved in order for the flooring to be put in properly.

Now, I'm pretty sure my dog is dumber than a box of rocks, but I also know he's a creature of habit. So imagine my surprise when I wake up the next day and it's business as usual - my dog is sleeping in his usual spot on the couch, my wife is aggravating me for moving the couch, but everything is find.

I come home from work that evening and as I'm walking in the door, I hear a loud thud. It was my dog. He had jumped where the couch used to be, and face-planted into the wall. I'm stunned because I don't think he's ever done that before. He walks in the living room and sniffs the couch as if he's trying to figure out where it went, kinda like Tommy in that scene from Rugrats. So now he's just walking around, sniffing around, and it's kind of funny. He's figured out the couch is in a different spot, but he still keeps jumping to where he used to jump and smashing into the wall. After a few minutes, he's figured it out and he's back to his usual spot on the couch, but occasionally he will still jump for the old spot and miss. For the rest of the night, he's just fine and the next night is even better - he's already figured out where the couch is and he's not smashing into the wall at all.

Fast forward to tonight. I get the kids to bed, then move the couch back over. It's now 10pm, and I'm starving again, but nothing out of the ordinary so far. I go to bed, wake up the next day, and it's business as usual again. I wake up, go about my day, come home, and hear a loud thud. It's my dog. He jumped and smashed into the wall. This is getting comical now; I'm actually LOLing when I see him do it. So for the rest of the night, he's doing the same thing he did last time - jumping for the couch and missing, but occasionally getting it right. Now I know dogs have a strong sense of smell, and he can obviously smell the couch, but this seems absolutely ridiculous that for two days in a row, he just completely forgets that the couch is in a different spot.

So, Dog People of Chambers, especially the ones with older dogs, does this seem ridiculous to you? My dog is about 13 years old. I know his sense of smell is probably weaker now, but come on - he can't remember for two days in a row that the couch is in a different spot? I don't know if it's my dog, or just dogs in general, but this is just crazy to me.
