CMV: The internet’s obsession with owning a house as a symbol of success is exhausting.

The reason why house prices are so high is because of the wealthy elite that are purchasing huge estates and houses as a simple status symbol based on their wealth. You won’t own a house just because you think owning a house is a step in your life that you want to happen, or happen at all. You won’t own a house if you think it’ll be fun because it’s not. You won’t own a house because you think it’s some new milestone in your life that you need to accomplish. Most people won’t ever own a house because they are too expensive. Most people who do own a house are wealthy and financially able to afford such a thing and have the confidence in their financial stability in order to do so.

The rest of us are stuck wading through the waters of confidence, praying that we can even afford to live in an apartment, let alone a house. Oh, you want to own a house because you just like the idea of it? Well you can’t because you can’t afford it. If you can afford it, you don’t need to own a house because you are already wealthy enough you don’t need to own a house. Everyone I meet who is always talking about wanting to own a house are the type of people who can’t keep a job for more than three months without quitting because it’s too stressful. They can’t afford a house and will never be able to.

I don’t understand why owning a house is such a big deal to people. They are expensive, not fun, and not at all a goal or milestone that most people will ever accomplish. What’s so great about the idea of owning a house anyway? You have to pay a mortgage every month. That’s not fun. You have to keep up the house. That’s not fun. What’s the point of owning a house? It doesn’t even make sense. These people literally don’t even make enough money in some cases to pay rent, and they’re talking about owning a house? How does that even work out in your brain? You could barely even afford to rent a house, and you’re thinking about owning a house? That doesn’t make any sense. I would much rather rent an apartment if I had the choice.
