My boyfriend and I go out to dinner and I say “oh, I like that dress! You should get it for me!”
He says “no.”
Then I move on with my day.

He gets annoyed and says “I’m entitled to my opinion!”

One day we were driving and I said “I love that car!” And my boyfriend says “well it’s ugly.”

I say “well I like it!”
(Only two people in the car...)

He says “I thought I was allowed to have an opinion?!”

We have another car. I say “I love that car.”

He says “yes it’s beautiful.”

So I say “well you should get it for me!”

He says “no.”

I’m a little frustrated so I say “you should always say ‘I love you and I’m so happy you like that, but I don’t want it because XXX reason.”

He says “I’m entitled to an opinion and I came from an “always say no to your women” household.”

I say “well, I love you so much and it hurts my feelings so much when you say no, and it makes me feel sad and unloved and like I can’t ask for anything. But I love you so much, and I would never want to control your thoughts and words, but I just don’t want you to ever say ‘no’ anymore and I’ll do the same for you.”

He says “I’m sorry. I didn’t know it made you feel unloved. In the future, of course I can do that.”

This was months ago, but he STILL says “no.”

When I tell him it hurts me, he says “I’m trying to do something nice for you!”

I say “so you’re entitled to an opinion and you want to do something nice for me, but you want to hurt me and say something that you know pushes me away?”

He says “no, I don’t want to hurt you! I’m entitled to an opinion and you know I love you and I’m doing something for you.”

What do I do? I don’t want to control him. I just don’t want him to say no. I love him so much.
