"Mirage"

The desert sun beat hot on the sand. A lone man walked through the sand, his head covered by a hat and his arm covered by an artificial limb. He was not naturally this way though.

Mirage. The word meant a lot to him. Sometimes he thought it was because he thought it was his name. Sometimes he thought it was just because he thought it was his name. Sometimes he thought he just forgot.

That's the whole point of a cybernetic brain, though. To forget, to remember that you forgot, to forget that you forgot, and to forget that you forgot that you forgot. And to keep it all in your head.

He walked towards a skyscraper and entered through the front door. A man at a desk made out of metal and a computer in front of him looked up at him. "Password?" he asked.

"Tommy," he answered.

The man pressed some buttons and a door opened behind him. He went into the elevator and pressed a button. It opened to a room filled with people. One of those people was a woman. She was beautiful, and like him, had an artificial limb.

"Sarah," she said.

He thought for a moment. "Mirage," he answered.

"Right," she said. "I forgot."

They walked towards a room. He went in, and she closed the door.

Inside the room was a computer. On the computer, there was another man. "I think you forgot some things," Mirage thought.

"What did I forget?" he asked.

"Your memories," answered the man on the screen.

"Right," he said. "I forgot them."

"No, you didn't," said the man. "I took them. I'm afraid you have to pay me back."

Those were his last words.

The man on the screen stopped talking, and Mirage thought. Then he ran to the computer, pulled the cord out of the back of his head, and ripped everything out of it.

"What did you do?" Sarah asked.

"What did I do?" Mirage replied. "I did what I was supposed to do."

He left the room and pressed a button. The elevator opened, and he got in. Then he got out, walked through the door, and left the building behind him.

This time, he didn't forget the password.

But that didn't matter.

Because he forgot his name.

Mirage.
