How Much Do Medical Coders Really Make?

I’ve been very curious about why coding is such a joke of a profession if pay is $12-14 an hour. Who pays that little? I’ve looked around a little bit, maybe it’s an entry-level thing. I’ve seen coding jobs where pay ranges from 30-60 an hour, but I need to know more. Like, is that per hour to start with no experience? Is that an annual salary for experienced coders? Is coding really as lucrative as some sites make it out to be? I want to make a career change but I’m not interested in making $12-15 an hour. I need to know what’s real and what’s hype. I have 4 kids and I want to make sure this career is actually worth pursuing.
