Why it it so hard to make a kid eat a nut-free lunch?

I had a kid come in from another school today and I asked about their lunch. They said they were afraid of being hungry so they brought a bag of trail mix. I asked if it had nuts in it and they said yes. Had it never occurred to them that you can put other stuff in trail mix? Like dried cranberries, or chocolate chips, or crackers?

It doesn't even have to be trail mix; I've had kids bring in sandwiches or stirfries or leftovers; just don't include any nuts. How hard it that? And if you're afraid you're going to starve to death, why don't you bring more crackers, or grapes, or apples, or granola bars, or cookies? I just don't get it.

Edit: it's just so weird that they would put nuts in a food that's meant to be portable and eaten in a group. I've never had trail mix without nuts because it makes no sense to me, but it's not necessarily for eating in a group. I've never had granola bars or energy bars with nuts in them in years, they are meant to be eaten on the go. Crackers or fruit leather or even the little cups of applesauce you can get are all meant to be eaten on the go.

Maybe it's just the food for hiking; I've never been backpacking or anything so my sample size is limited.
