Where did the term “geek” come from and how is it pronounced?

I had to watch a video yesterday and the narrator said something along the lines of “anyone who had a chick in their lives knows that while your female significant other may love you, she also loves to hate you and humiliate you in front of her friends.”

I died laughing. It’s so true.

The narrator then said “right geeks?”, pronounced it /geek/ like “reek” without the /c/.

I then looked up the origins of the word and it was actually pronounced /giːk/ when it first originated and then later on people started pronouncing it /ɡɪk/.

It originated in the late 19th century and it was a word for freak show performers. It was a shortened version of the English word geck.

The term then died out in the 1940s and then got revived again in the 1950s.
