What if the government began selling the drugs that are banned? How do you think this would affect society as a whole?

I'm just wondering because I think (I hope) a majority of us can agree that the war on drugs has done far more harm than good. I think the government should heavily tax (like cigarettes and liquor), regulate, and sell the drugs that are currently illegal.

I think the first initial effect of this would just be a massive increase in drug use. Maybe this would lead to a massive spike in drug-related deaths, I'm not sure. But if we all knew/understood what exactly we were getting, and what the safe dosage is, and the government (taxpayers) were footing the bill for the medical and social costs associated with drug use, I can imagine things would get a lot better/less stressful all around.

Also, clearly this is a pretty simplistic view of an obviously very complex situation, so please send me anything that you think I should read. I'm obviously not very knowledgeable on the topic.

Edit: to clarify, I am talking about all currently illegal drugs/controlled substances.
