Question: American visiting Canada, and vice versa

For us Canadians, we simply need a passport, a driver's license, a birth certificate, and car insurance (if you're driving). If you're flying, you don't need proof of car insurance.

What about Americans? I'm coming to realize that Americans don't even need their actual passport - they just need a photocopy of it,, and an enhanced driver's license. I've even heard of people walking in with *just* a photocopy of their enhanced driver's license. It doesn't even have to be the real license, just a photocopy of it. ?
