I’ve been an SAR officer for the United States Postal Service for five years now. I love my job, and I take pride in saving the lives of lost people. But over the last few months, I’ve had three extremely disturbing cases, and I’m starting to think something might be horribly wrong.

The first occurred about a month ago. I got a report about an older man who had gone out to check his mail and hadn’t returned. His wife was worried, and a neighbor had found his empty truck in the driveway. It wasn’t uncommon for animals like bears or snakes to attack people, especially older folks, so I started searching the neighborhood. His mail hadn’t even left the post office, so I figured he’d never made it out. A thorough search of the neighborhood revealed nothing, until I finally found him huddled in someone else’s dog house. He was shivering, and when I asked what was going on, he said he’d gotten the mail, and was walking back up the drive when the papers started to flutter out of his hands. He thought he could get them all, but someone kept tugging them away from him and running just out of his reach. He chased the man for blocks, and everything went dark. When he came to, he was in the doghouse, and had somehow smashed out all of the windows in the house behind him. The homeowner was very understanding, and the gentleman’s wife was just grateful to have him back safe and sound.

About three weeks later, I got a report from a woman who said her two boys hadn’t come home from walking the dog. She was worried they had been attacked by an animal, and was afraid to go out and look herself. I searched the neighborhood again, but the only trace I could find of them was a soccer ball lying in the middle of the road. I started to make my way back to the house to see if she recognized it when I heard a bang. I turned and saw a garbage can tip over on the side of the street, and a bunch of trash spill out into the road. Suddenly, a soccer ball rolled out from the mess of trash and came to rest at my feet. It was the same ball I’d just found, and I started to feel a little uneasy. I noticed a trash can on the other side of the street tip over as well, and a soccer ball rolled across the street towards me. I started to run in the direction I thought the boys had gone, and every time I saw a trash can tip, I knew I was getting closer. Eventually, I found the boys and the dog, but they were different. They seemed angry and agitated, and the dog had snapped its leash. A quick inspection confirmed what I already suspected - they were dead. I called for an ambulance, and when the officers arrived, they said it looked like the boys had been dead for some time. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but I figured I just hadn’t been looking where they actually were. I thought I was just getting old.

The last one happened just yesterday. A lady’s teenage daughter was out smoking a cigarette in the back yard when she screamed. Her mom went out to check on her, but she was gone. I started searching the neighborhood, and the only clue I had was that the girl’s cigarette pack was still on the ground. I followed the road until I reached a bridge where I heard some noise. I went down into the drain and saw a pack of cigarettes float by in the current. I followed the tunnel until I started hearing running water, and when I rounded a corner, I saw the girl. She was dead, and her body was floating in a current of water. I tried to go out and get some help, but when I got back, she was gone. I followed the tunnel further until I reached a large door. It was rusted through, and the only thing I could see on the other side was darkness. I decided to go back and get some help, but when I turned around, the water was already moving towards me. It had been about a foot deep when I found the girl, but now it was rising almost to my waist. I started running as fast as I could, and when I reached the point where I first found the pack of cigarettes, I could feel the water recede. I went back to the house and told the mom what had happened. She asked me to look again, and I reluctantly agreed.

I followed the tunnel back to the large metal door, and decided to go out and get some help. As I turned around, I started running to get out of the water, but it didn’t come. I reached the large metal door again, and felt the water rush up behind me, almost to my waist. I started to run again, and made it back to the tunnel, where the water receded again. A few more trips led to me realizing that I had somehow entered some sort of loop. Suddenly, a pack of cigarettes floated towards me. It was the girl’s pack.

Dreading the answer, I asked if the girl had been found yet. The mother was extremely grateful when I asked, and said that the girl had been found in her bed, asleep. I told the mother I was going to go home and rest, and I come back if I was needed. But the truth was, I wasn’t going to come back. Something was horribly wrong here, and I didn’t want to find out any more.
