Does anyone still like being called “girl”? I (41) still identify as “girl” and I still like it when my wife (45) calls me “my girl”

Same-sex couple here. I didn’t really experience the term “girl” being used as a pejorative earlier in my life. I was mostly oblivious to feminist issues in general. When I grew older and discovered I’m a lesbian, I suppressed it for many years. I identified as a tomboy because I was afraid to be called a lesbian. So, I feel like I didn’t really embrace my feminine side until I was in my 30s. By that time, feminism was still still moving through its third wave.

So, I feel like I didn’t really embrace my feminine side until I was in my 30s. By that time, feminism was still still moving through its third wave. I felt like men were less in the habit of calling women “girl” by then. Women like me, anyway. I didn’t know of any women who still liked the term “girl”, either. It was better to say “woman”, because that was less diminishing, less demeaning.

My wife in the 70s & 80s (before the feminist third wave), grew up in an era where girls were held back in school. They were discouraged from pursuing math and science. It was actually illegal for women to play sports in school. They were discouraged from pursuing careers. Women who worked after becoming mothers were judged, shamed. Women who didn’t want children were judged/shamed. Women who worked outside the home were judged/shamed if they hired a nanny.

So when she called me “my girl”, I felt like I was being pampered. I didn’t feel diminished. I loved being treated like that. I loved the term “girl” because it still felt like I was being pampered. I still love being treated like that.

I feel like, if I’m ever single again, I will stop using the term “girl”. But I’m not single anymore, I’m happily married. I love still being called “my girl” and I love still referring to myself as “girl”. I still identify with “girl” because I feel like I’m still being pampered.

Does anyone still like being called “girl”?
