It began with a post in r/confession. A throwaway account with a generic username. All it said was “Please take a copy of the following” and a link to some random dropbox account. The dropbox account had a .txt file with the following inside.

My name is elizabeth, and I was studying to be a meteorologist. I had gotten into a bit of trouble with my university, specifically, I had a hard time keeping up with all the math. I had to wait for my next attempt at calc III, so I decided to look into internships. I was a no name college girl, I knew I needed a good internship or a lot of them if I was going to get into a good grad program.

This is when I found out about the Exalted Council Of Sciences.

They had an internal internship program, and they would pay you to work as an intern if you could accept fast. I had to jump through a few hoops, but they were the only ones really looking at me.

At first, it seemed great. I was sent to this isolated research station in the arctic for four months. I had a nice place to live, and I was free to study whenever I wanted. Sure, what I was doing was secret, but it all seemed like a great deal. I had free time, and I could study. I was close to isolated, but I was never alone. There were all sorts of people around, but they did not want to talk to me. Frequently, my coworkers would shy away when I came near. Sure, I was a college kid, I was isolated in the arctic, and I did not help that image by having bright pink hair, but could I really have been that threatening to them?

The first night was very weird. I had a room with a bunk bed, and a young man had been sleeping in the other bunk. He rushed out the door, never even looking at me.

I settled in and all was good. I spent a few days training, and got to work. I was a meteorologist, but I did not do any meteorology. I was to scan a radar system. Look for any anomalies, and mark them down in a notebook.

I was so bored. I spent so much time with nothing to do, and I very quickly learned that the image of the bored shy girl with pink hair was not going to make any new friends. I tried to strike up a few conversations, but they would frequently cut it off. Many of my coworkers just straight up avoided me. Was it something in the water?

My coworkers did not seem to notice, but I very quickly learned the routine. I knew when all my coworkers woke up, went to work, and when they went to bed. I had no right to be there, but I had a hard time putting it together.

Eventually, I was able to create a map of everyone’s lives in the station. I knew who was close with who, and who certainly was not. I knew who put out their trash at the same time every night, I knew when I could sneak a peek at the local pool. I knew how long it would take to get caught.

I tried to avoid the local pool as much as I could. But I inevitably had to go there at some point or I would lose my mind. I would make sure to only go at night, when I knew I would be alone.

Eventually, I was able to be a fly on the wall for all sorts of things. I was able to be a little spy. I would be careful to avoid getting caught, but I certainly did get caught several times.

I snuck around to all sorts of places. I knew when everyone was sleeping, and I knew when everyone woke up. I knew who was having an affair, who had fallen in love, and who was putting fake spiders on everyone's desk.

Eventually, I was able to be a fly on the wall for almost everyone. Things would happen, and I would notice it. I would put together a story, what was happening, who was involved, even who was going to be involved.

I began to create fake stories. Was janitor bob going to fall in love with the manager? Was the cook going to make a cake that was very...interesting?

What I was doing was my own little game. I knew I was just being a creep, I knew I was just being a stalker, but it kept me occupied. I would do it at work, and make up fake stories about my coworkers.

It kept me sane.

Right up until the day they took me.

There was several men in the room, and they all came in without knocking. I was barely able to cover up, but I had already seen myself in the mirror, I was covered in scars. I knew they had been using me for something, but I did not know what.

“Elizabeth, you’ve been chosen for what we call Project Overwatch.” He said.

I began to protest, but he cut me off with something that I would never forget.

“Elizabeth, your family has put you up for a very special program. You have a unique skill, and we need it. We did everything in our power to help you flair this skill. You have been in a sort of temporary amnesia. Do you remember why you left your college in the first place?”

“I had a little trouble with my math.”

The man chuckled.

“Trouble with math is not enough to shy someone out of college. We altered your memory to give you this story, but I assure you, that is not what happened.”

“I don’t believe you.” I said, I was starting to be a little more brave.

The man chuckled.

“Elizabeth, would you like to know why you’re really here?”

“yes, of course I want to know!”

“Look.” He pointed to the window.

Outside was an empty wasteland. The Arctic tundra, with just a small group of buildings to break up the ice.

“I don’t see anything.” I said.

The man chuckled, then very quickly walked to the window. I was shy and did not want to look at him, but he quickly yelled at me to look.

He pointed to a small building.

“Look there, can you see anything?”

“I don’t see anything.”

He began to laugh.

“You don’t see anything? Well, would you look over there.” He pointed to a different building.

“Nothing.”

He pointed to a third building.

“Right there.”

“I don’t see anything.” I was growing more and more annoyed, what was this man talking about?

He walked forward a bit.

“This is what we call the void. You see, our facility here has been running for quite a few years. We were originally put here to study the Earth’s magnetic field, but we discovered something different. There is something out there that we cannot understand.”

I chuckled, I was a bit high on a mixture of painkillers and adrenaline, and his story was a little too ridiculous.

He began to laugh.

“I see you do not believe me. That is fine. Let me show you.”

He walked over to a desk and sat down.

He needed some time to prepare, but eventually, he was able to show me.

I was able to see something that I could not understand. It was a little thing, a tiny little creature that was unlike anything I had ever seen. It was small, so small I could only see it through a very special camera, but it was something. I knew it was something.

As I watched the creature, I began to feel a little different. I did not feel pain anymore, and I did not feel any fear.

I was elated.

I had to help, I had to.

The man began to laugh.

“I knew you would see it. Did you know, that of all the people we have brought here, only about a fifth of them can see these little creatures?”

“What happened to the others?”

He chuckled.

“You mean the ones who can’t see?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t know, but I assume they’re all dead. You see, we did everything we could to put you through the most extreme situations, and make you flare your unique skill. Some of you succeeded, and some of you failed. I do not know what happens to the ones who cannot see, but they’re not my department. You are part of the fifth now. Do you understand what that means?”

I shook my head.

The man grinned.

“You, my dear, are the chosen ones. You are the storm chasers. You are the people who are going to ensure that our world is safe.”

I was confused, but I was also very excited. I had a purpose, I had a job, and I would do whatever I needed to do for my job.

The man handed me a piece of paper.

“You need to do your job. Read this, and do it.”

I read it eagerly.

“I’ll do it!!” I yelled, I was certainly in a manic state.

The man began to laugh.

“I knew you would.”

I read the piece of paper again, and then again.

I began to laugh.

I will ensure the safety of the world. I am the chosen one, what I am doing is necessary. I am a storm chaser, I am elated.

What I am doing is important. I certainly am elated.

What would the world be without the elated?

I am a meteorologist, with a job that does not include meteorology, but I am going to save the world. I am the storm chaser.

I will ensure the safety of the world.

Right now.

Right now.
