CMV: It’s wrong to ask people to stop using the term “gamer girl” because it’s derogatory when gamers have specifically built that bed to lie in.

Obligatory: I’ve been in the gaming community for almost 15 years now. I’m a woman, I’m also a fairly serious gamer at least on PC.

A lot of people have to deal with harassment because they are women who play games and have the audacity to allow people to know that they are women (gasp!). Apparently gamers have to sterotype and bash their own gender to make themselves feel better. The interenet is full of sexism and mysogeny, everyone should know this by now.I do not condone sexism because I’m a woman. I also think that this sub misses a lot of nuances and context in discussions of “changing your view.”

In my opinion, gamers as a subculture have built the bed in which they now have to lie. Gamers have been stereotyping themselves for many years, and they are finally feeling the backlash. They are mad that people are making fun of them when they ask for nothing else. Gamers specifically ask to sterotype themselves and have created their own stereotypes. They ask people to sterotype them all the time with the term “gamer girl.”

In my opinion, gamers should work on steretyping themselves less and being less obsessed with their hobby. It’s okay if someone doesn’t like your hobby, and it’s okay if you have your own hobby. Just be quiet about it.I think there is a lot wrong with gamers as a community specifically. I think gamers ask for people to make fun of them. I think traditional gamers specifically are boring, rude, and obnoxious. I think that gamers are obsessed with their steretypes. I think that gamers are the problem and they are the source of their own misery. I think that there is no problem with steretypes when they are used casually unless you specifically take them as an attack. I think gamers sterotype themselves specifically. I think that gamers work on steretyping themselves and obsessed with their hobby all the time. I think that if gamers have the time to act obnoxious to women and ask for games to cater specifically to them, they have the time to take responsibility for the way gamers are looked at.

cmv.

tl;dr: Gamers act obnoxiously and sterotype themselves all the time and sterotype their own gender. They are obsessed with their hobby to the point where it bleeds into the rest of their lives. People will make fun of gamers no matter what, and specifically asking people to stop using steretypes won’t lead anywhere.

Edit: To everyone saying that I don’t use proper grammar, spelling, or syntax I’m half asleep. I’m sorry that I offend you so much with my lack of proper grammar, spelling, and syntax. I also apologize for not being native English speaking.

To clarify, I think gamers steretyping themselves aren’t wrong. I think that gamers asking for people not to use certain words specifically while gamers are steretyping themselves all the time is not right.

Edit 2: I should mention that I specifically am talking about traditional gamers. People who specifically sterotype themselves and call themselves gamers. Their idea of fun is to play video games all the time while doing nothing else. They also think that video games are the best hobby and it should be part of our everyday lives. They also think that video games are for pure entertainment and should not be educational.

I think steretypes are fine. It’s how you use them that matters. I can be a "gamer girl" and use that as a steretype without thinking it’s derogatory. I can sterotype myself all I want. I can ask people to use that steretype all I want. The real issue is when people use these steretypes as an attack. I work to make sure that my hobby doesn’t bleed into the rest of my life.I work to make sure that my hobby is not who I am. I accept that people may not like my hobby. I accept that I should not identify as a gamer. I do not think that gamers are a valuable part of society. They should not be obsessed with their hobby. I do not think that gamers are allowed to complain when people make fun of them when they are obsessed with their hobby all the time. I do not think that gamers steretyping specifically are allowed to sterotype others. I do not think that gamers steretyping specifically are allowed to complain when people make fun of them steretyping themselves.
