Did France really pay very little for military protection from the USA?

I am French and I very much dislike France and France's president and his very French attitude. I have lived in the United States and loved it and I would like to immigrate back to the USA. But one thing I'm not sure of is if it is true that France only pays "a little" for protection from the US military. I know Trump is known for lying but how much do France pay for the military protection from the USA? He was right France and Germany along with most European counties should pay more for military protection and start arming themselves.<br><br>Sorry about being lazy and not looking it up myself.<br><br>Edit: The other day Trump tweeted: "President Emmanuel Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from potential threats. Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of NATO, which the U.S. subsidizes greatly!"
