If you close your eyes and spin until you get dizzy, once you stop, your consciousness temporarily switches with your parallel universe counterpart of the same gender.

You’re not really sure how it works, nor do you fully understand the concept of consciousness switching. What you do know is that after years of painstaking testing and research, you now have a foolproof method to travel to parallel universes.

Your method:

Close your eyes.
Get dizzy.
Switch.

And switch you do.

You spin, dizziness hits, and you stumble to the nearest couch. You open your eyes, looking around confused. Everything looks unfamiliar. This isn't your house, your car, or even your office.

You stand up, confused, and walk over to a painting on the wall. It’s a group painting of several people, with yourself in the middle. Except that this time it's a man standing where you normally would be.

Confused, you stumble to the nearest door, and walk outside. You look around at the unfamiliar city, and realize you no longer know where you are, or who you are.

You spin yourself dizzy, stumbling to a nearby bench. You open your eyes, groggily, looking around at your now familiar surroundings. You stand up, and walk to your car.

Shit.

You don't know how to drive.

You walk inside a nearby restaurant, and sit down at the bar. A young male bartender walks up to you, smiling.

"What'll it be miss?"

"Water," you respond gruffly, not used to the sound of your voice. "And what the hell is going on?"

The bartender, now closer, looks you strange, bringing his voice down to a whisper.

"Are you okay miss? You don't look so good."

You grit your teeth, frustrated.

"That's because I'm not 'miss'." You respond, trying but ultimately failing to deepen your voice. "I'm...I'm him." You say, indicating the painting in your head.

"Oh." The bartender says, taken aback. "Sir?"

"Y-yes."

"Why are you wearing a dress and sitting at my bar talking like a chick?"

You grit your teeth, trying to hold in your temper. This was your idea, after all.

"I just..I just recently found out if you spin, until you get dizzy...you switch lives."

The bartender looks at you like you're crazy.

"Weirdo." He says, before opening a menu. "Now are you gonna order?"

You spend the next few hours getting accustomed to your new male body, and learning the ways of this new life. Eventually, you are able to drive, although you still can't figure out after-shave.

Over the next few months, you switch between lives several times. With each switch, you learn more about the other life, and yourself.

You start to notice things.

In your life, your parents are still alive, but they're bitter over the recent passing of your brother. In his life, his parents are deceased, but his older brother is still alive.

In your life, you hate clowns. In his life, he's a professional clown and actually enjoys it.

In your life, you recently graduated from college. In his life, he dropped out of college to play guitar in a band.

With time, you start to feel like you've lived multiple lives.

You switch back to your life, content with your new knowledge and perspective on life.

But something is wrong.

You walk into your apartment, but it feels...different.

You look around, trying to place your finger on what exactly it is.

When you finally figure it out, your jaw drops in shock.

The painting...it's different.

You're no longer in the middle, surrounded by family.

It's him.
