I have been reading a lot of fantasy books throughout my life. I am now 31 years old. And I have wondered if a society that has magic would evolve towards the modern era.

For example: The first thing I would do if I had telekinesis would be to be the best poker player in the world. The second thing I would do would be to make a lot of money by cheating. The third thing I would do is to manipulate the economy through the stock market.

Or for example the magic of levitation. I would become rich through cheating. I would pretend that I am a cargo company and I would pretend that I have developed a machine that allows me to fly cargo. The same with the magic of invisibility or mind control.

Or for example the magic of healing. I would sell myself as a doctor and then I would use my magic to heal any ailment. The magic of fire. I would use it to pretend that I have invented a machine that makes clean water without any effort in return for money. Something like a portable stove.

In general I would do things so that in the end I could buy a lot of things like a house, cars, food. A life of luxury. I would become a millionaire overnight.

My question is, are there any fantasy books that show a society with magic that exists in the modern era? I have already read Terry Pratchett and his Discworld. I would like to know other books, authors, where the society has evolved to the modern era with magic.

I am a programmer, so it is my job to simulate the behavior of other systems. And I can assure you that if I had magic I would make a lot of money from it. It's not about the morality of using it for good or evil, it's about how it would generate value in the modern era. In addition, I would not feel bad in taking advantage of it. I believe it is my right to take advantage of it. This would make life too easy. But in the end it is simple, too easy. What I want to know is if there are books where they have a society that has evolved with magic to the modern era.

I am not talking about books that talk about magic in the modern era, but books that show a society that has evolved with magic.

I'm also aware of the first law of thermodynamics and I'm not going to use the cliché of the magic of thermodynamics.
