Hello. I am a High School English teacher in a high-needs school. I have an active relationship with 80% of my students outside of class. That means we talk on the phone, by text or email or have had a 1 on 1 meeting that was a “check in” for 10 minutes. I am looking to grow that relationship to more students before we start online learning. I want to know how you relationship-build with your students as they are as important to me as oxygen.

Update: I personally called 135 kids and left voice messages for the other 40 I couldn’t reach. I texted 75 students that I know don’t have access to voicemail. I put 100 letters in the mail in case they wanted to have my contact info or just needed some paper to write on. I had about 4 responses and 2 of those were parents. Parents love this idea. I had one student reply and she is one of my special kids and made me cry. The other student reply was a parent. I did have a parent come to see me at lunch and then another parent call me telling me how much they loved this idea. The parents were really receptive and understand that the teachers aren’t leaving them but rather, the situation at hand is taking their teachers away from them. I spent 8 hours doing this as I took an hour on my planning we call subsistence time. I already know all of their names so I only needed to do this exercise once. This is a good activity for the beginning of the school year as well. I can’t wait to hug all my kids on Monday.

Also thank you Chambers for your kind comments and awards. Much love and stay safe.
