I've been learning Japanese for about 7 years now and I'm sure most of you will know by now. I did all of the bumps that a lot of people tend to do, including the "I want to learn Japanese because I like anime" phase, and I've actually met a lot of people who were in the same position as me but never left that phase, as they either gave up entirely or took a huge hit to their motivation as soon as they started to get a little bit of Japanese in their lives.

As a result of this, I've made sure to not rush myself, as I would much rather take my time to ensure I am doing it right, than to rush and get burned out. I've left for various periods of time, but I've always come back as, for some reason, I can just never get Japanese completely out of my life, and for that, I am thankful. Japanese is a lot of fun and has a lot of depth, and I feel really privileged to be able to learn it.

When I first joined this chamber, I was still in the early stages of my Japanese learning journey, and I was looking at the top posts just to see what types of thing tend to be more popular here. One of the top posts I saw was someone who, at the time, had been learning Japanese for about 10 years, and had talked about how he often was mistaken for a Japanese person by native speakers. I made a mental note of that, as someone who wanted to reach a high level of Japanese, and yesterday, something very similar happened to me.

I was in a coffee shop, just with my friend using English, and a Japanese woman came up and asked me in Japanese if I was working here or not, as she thought I was a worker. I kindly said I wasn't, and she said that she was sorry as she mistook me for a worker, and then, as I was leaving, she came up and said that I was Japanese, right? This was the first time I've ever been in a situation like this, and although it didn't seem like a lot, this was a really meaningful moment for me, and something I will never forget.
