I know this is an anti-AI chamber and our default position on this subject is one of suspicion and skepticism, but I really don't think that's entirely correct.

As you know we have massive environmental issues facing us and the challenges of climate change and plastic pollution and nuclear waste are issues that are far beyond our skills to deal with. I know that AI has been largely discredited by its tendency to produce gibberish, but people are largely unaware of the many cutting edge technologies that are already being developed. And I'm not talking about hypothetical futuristic technologies like carbon capture or space travel, but actual real things that are already being developed.

There already exists technologies that can use certain organisms or materials that can absorb plastic waste and convert it into usable fuels and materials. It's inevitable that this technology will be improved by AI and that it will be deployed on a global scale. This is just one of the many technologies that are already being developed.

I'm not trying to be overly optimistic, but our default position on AI is wrong headed and negligent. This is the only planet we have. And I think we have an obligation to look at AI seriously.

We must treat this issue far more seriously than we are treating it.
