I'm a vet and today I had a terrible first appointment with a home bred litter of a popular breed.
The owner was super excited about her litter in many ways but still wanted to talk about sterilization and contracts which I really thought was super cool.
She showed us the mama who was adorable and the dad who was also adorable and rambunctious. But the litter were a terrible sight to behold.
The owner super panicked to share with us the results of the puppies eyes, and hips, the results of the mama's elbows and clearance and all the other things she tested .
But the litter were weak, wobbly, super itchy and smelly.
The owner was panicked to share with us her feeding schedule, her worming schedule, her socialization plan, and her vaccination schedule, and I'm super impressed.
But the litter were a terrible sight to behold.

The owner was panicked to share that she had her home inspected in case we thought she was like a hoarder.
I told her she was a good breeder, but she was a terrible dog owner.
She asked what she could do to help the litter and I told her to send the dad off to his home and have the mama stay in the crate .
I told her to bring the whole litter back tomorrow and we would let her know what to do.

I told her to go to a pet store and buy 8 collars and 8 leashes and to tether the puppies around the house to prevent them from running around and hurting themselves, and to prevent them from jumping on the mama and the dad.
I told her to bathe them and put a medicated shampoo on them and to air dry them. And to give them all a probiotic.
She asked if she could feed them yogurt and I reminded her that no, she didn't say she had yogurt. She said probiotic.
She got upset that I didn't believe she could remember something simple like probiotic.

I told her to give them probiotic twice a day and depending on the brand, to follow the directions on the bottle.
I told her to give them kibble that is for a sensitive stomach. I told her to socialize them to the sun and moon, and to read them more books in many different languages. But only if they loved reading and wanted to read. I told her to try out the different birds sounds outside to make sure they were happy with the sounds in their environment.
I told her to put them to work, and to get them a job to make them happy, but only if they wanted a job. To keep them happy.
I told her to practice euthanasia so she would be a pro when it came time to kill them all.
She asked if she could keep a few and I told her she was a terrible dog owner and couldn't keep any of them.
She got upset and asked what she did wrong and I told her that she hasn't done anything wrong, and that she's a good breeder.
She got more upset and told me I was mean and nasty and that I was making fun of her. I told her I wasn't making fun of her. I told her she was a good person and that she deserved better than to be the owner of this litter.
She left the office in tears. I told her to get a good night's rest and to come in tomorrow and we would figure out what to do with the litter next.
I told her to bring pictures of them.

Edit: I didn't mean to say tether them around the house, exactly, more like a puppy play pen or a tether on a table/ play area where they can't move around more than a foot or two. I also didn't mean to say actual probiotic, I meant more like a supplement to help with gut health. I also didn't mean to say to euthanize them, I meant more like making sure she had a good euthanasia experience, I'm sure she'll need it. I also didn't mean to say that I would make fun of her, I meant more like I would make fun of her.
Also, I didn't mean to say to bring pictures of them.
