Levels of detail: how do you know where to hold the line?

So here is the eternal question of worldbuilding: how do you know how much detail is enough, and when to stop going deeper? Or, in my case, when to start going shallower. All too often, I start with an idea, flesh it out with a few more ideas, and then find myself spiraling out of control, deeper and deeper in the rabbit hole, not really sure when to stop. The worst part is that I find myself building frameworks for the framework, tools to help me build tools, and headcannon that may never come to head. It's exhausting and may have implications for my sanity. How do you know how much detail is enough? And do you have any tips for being more efficient with my efforts?

Edit: I think I have a few answers. I'm sure I'll cross paths with a few of you again. Thank you, worldbuilders.
