The fake pizza guy

I was 19 (35 now, 16 years ago), and a pizza place in town had just run an ad for large pizzas, smothered in toppings, for really cheap. As a college student on a tight budget, it was too good to refuse. So I called and ordered one.

The pizza place, when I called them, asked for my address and phone number, but not for payment information. I assumed that was normal, but looking back on it, I can't imagine any customer calling a place and ordering without them asking for some form of payment information.

Anyway, I waited for about 35 mins and nothing. So I called them back. No answer. So I called from my cell phone, and a guy answered, and I said "Hey, I placed an order about 40 mins ago, but if you guys aren't coming, please let me know, so I can stop waiting."

The guy on the phone said, "What's your address?" I told him, and there was a long pause on the other line. Then the guy said, "Yeah, we'll be there any minute." Then he hung up.

Five mins later, the doorbell rang. I lived in an upstairs apartment, and there was a wooden staircase that went from the ground into the apartment. In front of the staircase was a screen door, and then the main door (which if you didn't have a key, it would lock and you couldn't open it). So I looked out the screen door, and this tall skinny guy was standing at the bottom. I go out onto the balcony and say, "Hey, I thought you had my pizza." He said, "Yeah I do. Come get it."

Then I got skeptical, because why would a guy leave a pizza all the way at the bottom of the staircase? So I said, "That will be $19 please?" And he said, "I don't have the pizza, I need to come up and get the money first."

That's when I said to him, "You're not the pizza guy." And he said, "Yeah, I am. I need to come up so I can hand you the pizza." At which point, I shut the screen door and called the police, told them that some fake pizza guy was standing on my staircase, and the cop on the phone said "ma'am, get out the back door, go to the right, into that parking lot, and flag me down. Because we're on our way."

To this day, I don't know why that guy didn't come up the stairs and break the door down, he had plenty of opportunities to do so, but I'm really glad he didn't. I went out the back, into the parking lot, and flagged down the cop car. I got in and they said "show us where the guy is." I pointed and said "He's at the bottom of those stairs."

The cops went down, but the guy was already gone. They never caught him, and I never called that pizza place again nor did I ever recommend it to anyone. I also never, ever opened the door without first looking through the peephole, and when opening it, always had the deadbolt and chain locks on (which if you think about it, kinda defeats the purpose of having a door).

So fake pizza guy, let's not meet.

Edit: Wow, you guys, I am speechless. This is my first post, in 5 years on Chambers, and you've all blown it out of the water. Thank you all so, so, so much!!.

Edit 2: This wasn't marked as NSFW?? Can anyone mark it?? Or tell me how to do so??

Edit 3: I know some people say that this story is fake, but rest assured, it's not. If you're still doubting, PowerMod, who runs this Subreddit, has confirmed that this story happened, because she knows me IRL.
