There is a man standing in my backyard. When I look out the window, he’s gone. But hear his voice whispering in my ear. And I know that he is right in front of me.

I sit on the couch in my living room and stare out the window at the beautiful backyard I no longer use. I haven’t even opened the door since that day.

I can’t explain it. Most people would just call the police, but that doesn’t work for me. I have a valid reason for not calling them.

It all started on a sunny summer afternoon. It was a beautiful day. I had just come back from the store with my wife and was parking my car in the driveway when I saw the man.

The man standing in my yard. Smoking a cigarette.

He was a tall man with a thin build. He had a red baseball cap on and a white T shirt. His skin was deathly pale, and his eyes were a dark brown, almost black.

I felt a sudden surge of adrenaline as I stepped out of my car, to approach him. His eyes locked onto mine, and he smiled. I froze. The smile was so strange, it was unnatural, like he had an extra row of teeth that he had squeezed in. But he didn’t, it was just a sensation that I had.

I looked over at my wife to see her reaction. But to my surprise, she didn’t react at all. She looked like she hadn’t even seen him and she was busy giving instructions to the movers that were bringing our stuff into the house.

“We should put this over by the fireplace,” she said. “And the seniors, we’ll put in the upstairs bedroom.”

I looked back at the man in the backyard. He was still standing there. His thick black eyes locked onto mine, his strange smile lingering on his lips. I felt an unsettling chill run down my spine.

I looked back at my wife, thinking she had seen me look at the man and was giving me instructions on what to do with him. But that wasn’t the case.

“We’ll put the desks in the office, and the rest of the boxes in the kitchen.”

I looked back at the man, he was no longer there.

I got out of the car and quickly ran inside. I went straight to the back door and opened it, but there was no one there. And when I looked out the window, the man was gone.

I had a feeling. But dismissed it as paranoia. But to make sure, I looked for him everywhere. The garage, the basement, and even the attic. But the man was gone. Or so I thought.

I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was still somewhere in the house. But I couldn’t find him no matter how many times I looked.

That was until I heard him. His voice was like a cold wind on my skin.

“Do you know what we do to people who try to hide things?” He said. His voice was deep and raspy, like a smoker. He was only about an inch from my ear.

I spun around, but there was no one there.

My wife walked into the room, looking confused. “What do you mean, what did I say?”

I looked at her, but didn’t answer. I just looked back out the window, to the backyard, and then back at my wife. “Do you see him? The man in the yard?”

She looked confused. “What are you talking about?”

“The man in the yard. He’s tall with a red baseball cap. You didn’t see him?”

“Was that one of the movers? I didn’t notice him.”

I looked out the window again and this time I saw him, standing in the same spot as he had been before.

“I’m going to go talk to him,” I said,

My wife tried to stop me. “Wait, what are you going to say?”

But I was already out the door. I ran around the house, to the backyard, but he was already gone.

I went back inside the house and looked out the window, into the backyard, but there was no one there.

“You sure you didn’t imagine it?” My wife said.

I looked at her, dumbfounded. “No, I’m positive I didn’t imagine it,” I said.

But my wife just chuckled. “Well, there’s no one there now, so let’s worry about something else. We have a lot to do. But if you want, you can check again.”

I looked out the window, into the backyard, and there he was again. Standing in the same spot. Watching me. His dark eyes locked onto mine, and his strange smile. But as soon as I looked at him, he was gone again.

“You see? There’s no one there.” My wife said.

But I knew what I saw.

I didn’t sleep much that night. I was so paranoid, and I couldn’t stop checking the window. But every time I looked out, there was no one there. I could have sworn that I saw him at one point, but it was probably just a figment of my imagination.

I heard the sound of the window creaking open, but dismissed it as the house settling, until I felt the cold wind on my skin.

“I told you, I’m always right in front of you,” he said. His deep raspy voice brushed against my ear, as if he was standing right in front of me.

I woke up my wife in a panic and told her to check and see if the window was open.

But when she stood up, I saw him. He was right in front of me, his face inches from mine, but my wife didn’t see him. She looked at me with a worried expression on her face, and I realized, she had no idea what he looked like.

I had never described him to her. I had never described his thick black eyes, his red baseball cap, or his strange smile. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized, that I had never even told her his name.

“We’ll have to do this the hard way,” he said. His voice was cold and menacing as he pressed his lips against my ear.

I watched in horror as my wife got out of bed and walked outside. No, she didn’t walk outside, she crawled. She crawled like a dog across the floor and then out the window, never once acknowledging me.

“You know what we do to people who try to hide things?” He asked.

I didn’t answer, I just stared out the window at my wife, as she crawled past.

“We hurt them. And everyone they love.” He said.

When my wife crawled past the window, I saw her face. It was distorted, like someone had taken a vacuum and sucked all the fluid out of it.

There’s a man standing in my backyard. When I look out the window, he’s gone. But I hear his voice whispering in my ear. And I know that he is right in front of me.
